The 4 inch glazed fireplace tile format came into common use around 1918, and up until the 1960s it was the most popular tile for fireplaces in the UK.

The square tiles ideally reflected the geometric styles associated with the Art Deco influences of the period.

The 4 ¼ inch x 2 ⅛ inch format for glazed fireplace tiles is from an earlier period. It was in common use for fireplace hearths and tiled panels from around the 1880s to the 1920s. These fireplace tiles were almost always laid cross-bonded as brickwork commonly is.
